A 4G signal repeater, also called cell phone repeater, is a 2 way (bi-directional) amplifier. A booster amplifies the signal from the cell tower (downlink) to your cell phone, and also amplifies the signal from you cell phone to the remote cell tower (uplink). Hence it is a bi-directional (two way) amplifier.

Cell phone boosters work across a range of frequencies, typically for North America the two primary ranges are the 800 MHz Band (nominally based around 850MHz) and the 1900 MHz band, Other countries have slightly different frequencies but operate in both a high band and low band range.

Generally speaking, but not exclusively, the lower bands are used in long distance cell phone coverage, while the higher bands are used in urban environments. Your cell phone will automatically switch between one of the two bands without you knowing it.
