Advantage:
* Expanded communication distance.
* Increased the maximum number of nodes.
*Different communication rates are available for each network segment.
* Improved reliability. When a network failure occurs, generally only individual network segments are affected.
* Performance improved.
The main advantages of repeaters are simple installation, convenient use, and relatively low price. It not only plays the role of network distance, but also connects networks of different transmission media. The repeater works at the physical layer and is completely transparent to high-level protocols.
Disadvantage:
*Because the repeater regenerates (restores) the received attenuated signal to the state when it was sent, and forwards it out, increasing the delay.
*The MAC sublayer of the CAN bus has no flow control function. When the load on the network is heavy, overflow may occur due to insufficient storage space in the buffer in the repeater, resulting in frame loss.
*If the repeater fails, it will affect the work of the two adjacent subnets.
