The radio signal gathered at the antenna is amplified by built-in amplifiers in every mobile device. Similar amplification circuitry is used in Networking Band Selective Repeaters, but they also contain extra electronics and an antenna that re-transmit the signal, typically on a different frequency that is also compatible with the handset.
The external antennas on the repeaters are frequently positioned to keep them latched onto a cell site's signal. Even self-contained repeaters function best when placed and left in an area where they can pick up a strong signal. Power is needed in large quantities to pick up and re-transmit a booster.
